QUESTION

How do I Install Agents via the LAN Watch-based Install Agents page to certain Windows systems?

We have Kaseya installed on the Domain Controller's. However, we cannot push the installer to any workstations. We have tried LAN Watch-based Remote installs and AD-based installs, but they don't seem to be working. This is especially evident on Windows Server 2008 R2 and Windows 7 systems.

ANSWER

By default, Windows 7 does not allow software to be installed unless you have Administrator rights, and to install by a LAN Watch-based Remote install, the admin$ has to be shared. This is not just a credentials issue. It is User Access Control-related as well (UAC). Administrative rights need to be properly setup in order to install the software.

The Remote Installation using PSEXEC (which is actually KConnect.exe)requires access to the admins share of the target machine. In order to work with Windows Security, check if the following conditions are met & satisfied:

1. File and Printer Sharing is allowed through the Windows Firewall. Also make sure there are no other firewall rules blocking network access to the target machine.

2. Windows does not open up the admin share when the local admin account(s) have a blank password. Ensure this is not the case here.

3. By default, Windows Vista and newer versions of Windows prevent local accounts from accessing administrative shares through the network. You can enable this using a Group Policy or the registry:

Hive: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
Key: Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System
Name: LocalAccountTokenFilterPolicy
Data Type: REG_DWORD
Value: 1
