Problems connecting to agents running Windows Server 2008 Standard Edition (32-bit)

KB# KKB000929

SYMPTOM

When trying to connect to agents running Windows Server 2008 Standard Edition (32-bit), the following symptoms may occur: -

- connection fails

- connection is established but takes a very long time (e.g. several minutes)

- thumbnail image is loaded, but other components (such as Command Shell, File Manager) fail to connect

CAUSE

There is a known issue where KLC executables invoke Data Execution Prevention (DEP).

SOLUTION

There is currently no programmatic solution. The workaround is to configure DEP to "turn on DEP for essential Windows programs and services only" or add exceptions for these executables (under agent install directory): -

- AgentMon.exe

- LiveConnect.exe

- ExtDlls\LiveConnectTaskRunner.exe

- ExtDlls\ThumbnailCapture.exe

Details about how to configure DEP can be found here - http://blogs.technet.com/b/askperf/archive/2008/06/17/to-dep-or-not-to-dep.aspx

APPLIES TO
