Are there any issues with setting up thin provisioning on storage and guests?

SUMMARY

Are there any issues with setting up thin provisioning on storage and guests?

ISSUE

Purpose

Explain the Pros and Cons of using thin provisioned disks.

Description

Are there any issues with setting up thin provisioning on storage and guests?

Cause

Setting up thin provisioning on storage and guests makes UEB run slowly.

Resolution

It is recommended to use thick provisioned disks versus thin, as they will back up faster. There are no issues with using thin provisioned disks, except that performance will be lacking. Unitrends can back up, and restore to these with no problems, aside from slower speeds. This is why we recommend thick provisioned disks.

When we add storage to a UEB, even if it is set for thin provisioned, it will lay out and allocate the entire amount for what you have set for storage. So using Thin provisioned doesn’t give you the benefit of not using the space until you need it.
