Cold copy performance may decline following migration to CentOS 6

SUMMARY

Cold copy performance may decline following migration to CentOS 6.

ISSUE

Cold copy performance may decline following migration from CentOS 5 to CentOS 6 because of ineffecient resource usage by the purging subsystem.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, upgrade your appliance to version 10.1.

CAUSE

Older hardware systems were not architected at their time or scaled to support some future yet undeveloped workloads that are currently used by more modern software.  This can be seen in every single OS vendor lifecycle.  Software advances, hardware is static, the expected behavior is typically that over time overall performance may periodically decline after a major software or OS update.

However, in this case, Unitrends has identified certain code processes that could be tuned to eliminate high resource usage conditions on older appliances and better manage resource allocation.  This change in release 10.1 better manages these issues to return cold copy archive performance to expected prior levels.  Due to other enhancements in 10.1, deduplciated backups will export as much as 2X faster on CentOS 6 systems vs prior configurations in 10.0 or older.
