Disaster Recovery of a UB that is using Stateless Storage (the Unitrends Database exists with the Backup data)

RESOLUTION

You can deploy a new UB and follow the steps in the Tasks section below to attempt to recover settings, configuration, history, and data from your previous UB storage disks.

If you are deploying a new UB due to a required change to the NIC (network interface controller) which invalidated the license, it is recommended that you make those changes before powering on the UB for the first time. The moment the UB is powered on, the MAC address of the first NIC seen (e.g.: eth0 or ens192) is burned into the appliance. As this is a critical component for license verification, the MAC address of this first NIC cannot change throughout the life of the UB.

TASKS

  1. On your Hypervisor, power off the old UB VM and edit the settings. Detach the virtual disks that are used for the backups (not the 100GB OS). "VERY IMPORTANT" Make sure to keep track of the order of the disks.
  2. Download the Deployment Guide for Unitrends Backup on VMware/Hyper-v/Xenserver/AHV. Pay close attention to the steps in "Attaching storage that contains existing backup data".
  3. Deploy a new UB onto your Hypervisor (download links are in KB 5574). Then, edit the new UB and attach the virtual disks you just detached in step 1 above.
  4. Assign at least 4vCPU and 16GB of vRAM as per the Deployment Best Practices guide.
If you need to make VM setting changes to the Network Interface Controller (e.g. Nutanix, or apply previous MAC address), do so now.
  5. Power on the new UB VM. This will start the Unitrends Backup Console Interface.
  6. Edit and apply the Network and DNS the IP settings (IP/Subnet/Gateway/DNS).
  7. Start the Web Interface, and complete the Setup Wizard. There is a delay at the end before being presented your storage options.
  8. If data is found that could potentially be recovered, you will be presented with two options. To recover the settings, configuration, history, and backup choose the option "I am using this appliance to recover existing backup data." to attempt read and mount the storage. On new releases, choose RECOVER.
