SUMMARY
Why does my bare metal backup only restore the system volume?
ISSUE
Purpose
Bare metal backups and file-level restores.
Description
When restoring from a bare metal backup, only the system volume (typically C:\) is restored.
Cause
Windows bare metal backups only back up the system volume. Partition info is backed up as well, so when restoring from a bare metal backup, only the system volume’s data will be restored but the entire logical geometry of the client will be restored.
Resolution
After restoring a bare metal backup, volumes other than the system volume are present but no data is restored. Use standard file-level restore procedures to restore this data.
See our File-level Restores video as well as the Restoring File-level Backups chapter in the Unitrends Administrator’s Guide.
