What is rundll32.exe?

The rundll32.exe application is a native Windows application used to launch the shared .dll files. The process itself is harmless and is a regular part of the Windows operating system. The reason that multiple instances may appear on your agent machines is because the rundll32.exe application is needed to run the counter sets created by monitor sets assigned to the agent machine in the Monitor > Agent Monitoring > Assign Monitoring page.
Each counter set in performance monitor will have an associated rundll32.exe application with it. As this is a regular Windows application, it is very common to see more rundll32.exe instances than counter sets.
To reduce the number of rundll32.exe instances, navigate to the Assign Monitoring page and remove monitor sets containing counter monitoring.
