Backup Copies and Replication: Unitrends Cloud IPv4 > DNS Upgrade

What’s changing?

Unitrends continues to invest in new data centers and technology. As the leader in the industry for modern BCDR cloud architecture we are constantly innovating and making changes to best suit the needs of our customers.

To ensure the highest performance, availability, scale, and security replication configurations will be upgrading to DNS, replacing IPv4. Starting January 3rd.

Customers with custom static IP configurations for copies/replication to the Unitrends Cloud may be affected.

There is no action required from you unless you have firewall or security system rules filtering traffic that impacts the Unitrends appliance and its connection to the Unitrends cloud.

FAQs

How will I know the DNS address of my target?

Log into your appliance, navigate to Configure>Appliances>Backup Copy Targets

You will see the subdomain of your target under ‘Name;’ your DNS address will be ‘name’. unitrendscloud.com

What changes do I need to make to my local infrastructure?

If you are filtering traffic on the network where the Unitrends appliance resides (whitelisting the IP of the target), you will need to adjust accordingly (remove whitelist for IP, optionally, if your firewall supports DNS whitelisting, whitelist the DNS address instead)

What happens if I have IP firewall rules for the appliance and do not make this change?

Your replication may stop working as we perform system upgrades and routine maintenance until these rules are update or modified as described above

When will this change occur?

This process will begin on January 3rd 2023. The process will be rolling out across Unitrends data centers in waves, and your system might not be affected immediately.

What changes do I need to make to my Unitrends Appliance?

No actions are required from you for this change to the Unitrends Appliance configuration.

Will all my targets communicate using DNS or is it only Unitrends cloud?

If you have self-hosted targets, they will not be modified; only Unitrends cloud target configurations will be moved to DNS.

What if I’m not using the Unitrends cloud, or I’m using some other replication method?

This change will not affect you.

What can I proactively do before Jan 3?

Ensure your firewall is not configured only to only allow IP-based traffic to our cloud.

Is there a way I can test DNS with my target before this change occurs?

You can test pinging your target’s DNS address using the target name in the first question above.

What happens if I have IP firewall rules for the appliance and do not make this change?

Your replication may stop working as we perform system upgrades and routine maintenance until these rules are updated or modified as described above.

Are my old backups or copies affected in any way?

The change is only to the replication configuration; no backup data on the source or target will be changed.
