How is a virtual machine restored from an incremental backup?

SUMMARY

How is a virtual machine restored from an incremental backup?

ISSUE

Purpose

To explain how a virtual machine is restored from an incremental backup

Description

When you select a restore point associated with an incremental backup of a virtual machine, the VM is restored from the backup group to which the incremental belongs.  A backup group consists of a full backup (or synthesized full) and every differential and incremental backup run since the last full.  When you select a restore point associated with an incremental backup of a virtual machine, the appliance restores the VM using the data captured in the full backup and all changes captured by differentials and incrementals up to the point in time you select for the restore.

The VM is not actually restored from the incremental backup.  Instead, it is restored from all the data contained in the backup group to which the incremental belongs.  The appliance uses this data to restore the VM to the state it was in when the incremental associated with the restore point you select was run.
