ISSUE

A VMware backup is now the size of the provisioned space instead of the used space.

RESOLUTION

1. You should resolve this on the VMware side using 340005, as this is where the issue actually exists. Once you fix the issue, run a new 1-Time Full of the VM to resolve the issue on the Unitrends side.
2. If the issue is inside of Windows (data was temporary on the computer, then deleted), you will need to use a tool to actually zero out the data, as Windows does not really delete the data, only the marker. In such a case, VMware will not be able to shrink the disk down as you has expected (is actually in use). You could use a tool like SDelete from the Sysinternals suite, available as free download from Microsoft.
3. Alternatively, if you are not able to resolve the issue, you can install the Unitrends Client Agent on the VM and protected it using the File Level Backup with system state. You can restore it using a File-Level Replica restore directly back into VMware.

CAUSE

Thin Provisioned disks start small but grow as data is added within the VM. However if data is logically deleted inside the VM the thin disk will not shrink.
