SUMMARY
When backing up a windows 2012 server with Windows native deduplication and DFS enabled on the same paths, some files may hang for long periods on locks causing timeouts or backup failures. This is resolved in 9.0.0-15.
ISSUE
Backup of Windows 2012 with native deduplication enabled skips files or hangs for long periods during backup.
A review of the files in C:/PCBP/catalog.dir on the windows client may display the following entries on skipped files:
"BP:Backup data of the sparse and dedupe file is not supported"
RESOLUTION
Upgrade to release 9.0.0-15 or later.
CAUSE
When backing up a Windows 2012 server and Windows native deduplication is in use and DFS is in use on the same paths, some files may not be able to be backed up, and other files may hang for long periods on locks causing timeouts or backup failures. This issue occurs because DFS leverages some of the same file tags as deduplication and the protection of a sparse (deduplicated) file would conflict when backing up a deduplicated path.
The message, "BP:Backup data of the sparse and dedupe file is not supported" indicates the file may have been in use by DFS when the VSS snapshot was taken. These files may hang for a long time causing backup disruption as well.
