SharePoint 2007 Restore fails on SharedServicesContent database

SUMMARY

SharePoint 2007 backup farm fails with OnRestore message

ISSUE

Purpose

SharePoint 2007 backup farm fails with ‘OnRestore’ message on ‘SharedServicesContentdatabase.

Description

During VSS SQL backup of the SSPs database or SharePoint backup you receive the following message:

SharedServicesContent failed in event OnRestore. For more information, see the error log located in the backup directory. SqlException: A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server)

Cause

Office SharePoint Server 2007 supports the use of multiple filegroups for the SSP search database. To restore SSPs, the drives for the crawl and primary filegroups must have the same drive letter as the initial backup drive. If drives not match SSPs restore will fail. Other reason of failture that stsadm was not able to delete a content database during restore operation.

Resolution

Ensure that server has the same drive letters as the initial backup.

Send the databases affected to offline then rename them.

Restart your SSPs restoration using Central Administration site and by using SharePoint item recovery option on RRC.
