Can the Unitrends Client Agent send the backup data directly to a NAS or other storage device?

ISSUE

QUESTION: Can the Unitrends Client Agent send the backup data directly to a NAS or other storage device?

RESOLUTION

ANSWER: The data must always pass through the Unitrends Data Protection Unit (the UB Virtual or Recovery-Series Appliance). You can not use the Client Agent on the PC to send data to a NAS (or other storage device) directly.

The Unitrends solution has extensive intelligence in order to save space, allow for granularity in backup, restore, and administration, as well as the ability to search for the data you need to recover. For this, and many other reasons the data must be sent to the Unitrends DPU first for processing. It can then be copied to a different storage solution using compression only for long term retention (Cold Backup Copy) or copied to a different Unitrends system (Hot Backup Copy) where only the missing deduplicated blocks submitted for processing.
