What are my options for backing up raw device mappings (RDMs) in VMware?

SUMMARY

What are my options for backing up raw device mappings in VMware?

ISSUE

VMware supports 2 types of Raw Device Mappings (RDMs):

  1. Virtual RDMs (vRDMs)
  2. Physical RDMs (pRDMs)
Virtual Machines (VMs) with vRDMs can be protected by normal VMware Backups and require no special changes.

For VMs with pRDMs, an Unitrends agent (according to the guest operating system of the VM) needs to be installed in the guest and the pRDM can be protected accordingly.
Eg: If a VM has 3 disks and one of them is a pRDM, then, the 2 disks can be protected using Unitrends' vprotect Backups and the pRDM can be protected by installing an agent in the guest.
