Virtual machine is configured to use a device that prevents the snapshot operation: Device '' is a SCSI controller engaged in bus-sharing.

SUMMARY

“Backup failed: Error creating snapshot of VM: An incompatible device exists on the virtual machine: Virtual machine is configured to use a device that prevents the snapshot operation: Device '' is a SCSI controller engaged in bus-sharing. Drive have been marked as independent.”

ISSUE

Unable to use Snapshots or perform a backup on virtual machines configured with bus-sharing (1006392)

A VMware VM has a configuration setting that prevents snapshots from occurring.  VMs configured with bus-sharing do not support snapshots and thus will fail to backup using Host-level backups.

RESOLUTION

If bus-sharing is required, use Unitrends Backup or a Recovery-Series appliance to protect this VM using asset-level backups.

If bus-share is not required, disable bus-sharing for the VM.
