When deploying the UB in VMware via Web Console it fails with error "Failed to deploy VM: postNFCData failed"

SUMMARY

VMs deployed from OVF on some vSphere 6.5 and 6.7 editions may fail to deploy the VM with a VMWare error "Failed to deploy VM: postNFCData failed"

ISSUE

When deploying the UB OVF using the ESXi's Host Client (a vSphere web client built into ESXi), you experience these symptoms:

  • Deployment progress to 100% and fails with the error:
    • PostNFCData failed : IO error
    • Virtual machine creation from OVF tool works fine.

RESOLUTION

WORKAROUND: Some customers may have success using Firefox Browser in place of Chrome or IE to run the vSphere web console.

FIX: Follow the instructions in - VMWare KB 57599  Specifically, this requires upgrading vSphere ESXi 6.5 to Patch 03 or higher or to ESXi 6.7 to U1 or higher.

CAUSE

This issue impacts the deployment of VMs through the web console using OVFs and could impact any VM deployment in VMWare vSphere 6.7 prior to U1 and some 6.5 editions prior to P03. This bug occurs when using the ESXi's Hostd Client (the vSphere web client built into ESXi).

NOTES

Unitrends recommends VMWare customers remain on current ESXi and vCenter patch releases for their environments and patch regularly.

Unitrends Recommends running exclusively on the following ESXi builds or higher when VM host level backups will be leveraged.

  • 6.7 U1 or higher  (releases prior to U1 have CRITICAL defects, and image backups of the GA release could result in production VM crash, not only backup failure)
  • 6.5 U2C EP10
  • 6.0 U3f EP15
  • 5.5 U3b P10
  • 5.1 U3 P9
Unitrends Recommends users maintain a vCenter release version that is released with or after their ESXi host versions.
