Unable to access CIFS shares on the Unitrends appliance from a Windows system

SUMMARY

To address a known cause for Windows systems to be unable to access the CIFS / Samba shares hosted on the Unitrends appliance

You may test for this condition by running:

C:\Windows\system32>net view unitrends_appliance_ip

System error 1727 has occurred.

The remote procedure call failed and did not execute.

Group Policy or Local Security Policy are modified and preventing the Windows system from accessing the Unitrends hosted CIFS / Samba shares

1. Run gpedit.msc as administrator.

2. Go to Local Computer Policy->Computer Configuration->Windows Settings->Security Settings->Local Policies->Security Options

3. Ensure Microsoft network client: Digitally sign communications (always) is disabled

4. If you had to change the value in step #3, reboot the Windows system.
