Issue ID: EDR-09
Applies to: Datto EDR
Environment: Datto EDR portal/console-side
KB type: Best practice
Overview
This article describes recommended practices for identifying, reviewing, and cleaning up stale (inactive) Datto EDR devices in the console, to keep the device list accurate and licensing correct.
- Devices typically become stale when they are decommissioned, reimaged, or remain permanently offline without the Datto EDR agent being uninstalled
- .In Datto EDR, a device is considered stale if the agent has not checked in to the platform for more than 30 days. Refer to Navigating the Device details page.
Symptoms
- Growing number of devices shown as “Stale” in the console.
- Uncertainty about whether to manually remove stale devices or rely on automated cleanup.
- License/seat count appears inflated by stale entries.
Best Practice
Understand the stale status
- A device is marked as Stale if it has not checked in for more than 30 days.
Review stale devices regularly
- Review stale devices on a regular schedule (for example, monthly) rather than only when issues arise.
Verify device status before removal
- Confirm that the device has been decommissioned and is not temporarily offline (for example, a device assigned to a user on long-term leave or seasonal equipment).
- Review the device's last check-in time and compare it with your asset inventory or RMM platform, if available.
Configure automated device deletion
- Datto EDR includes an Automated Device Delete setting under Admin > Settings.
- Enable this feature and configure the number of days a device must remain stale before it is automatically removed.
Remove stale devices manually, if required
- Locate the device in the device list.
- Select the three-dot menu.
- Select Delete.
Understand the licensing impact
- Removing a device, either manually or through automated deletion, immediately frees the associated license.
Important Notes
- Always verify that a device has been permanently decommissioned before removing it.
- Avoid bulk deleting stale devices unless you have confirmed they are no longer required.
Tips and Tricks
- Compare stale devices with your RMM platform or asset inventory before removing them.
- If a device appears Stale but is known to be active, investigate agent connectivity or RMM integration issues.
- If automated device deletion is not working as expected, verify the Automated Device Delete setting under Admin > Settings.
