Retention
Retention is the policy-driven process of pruning older recovery points to manage storage while rolling forward the needed data to maintain recovery from the newer backup points.
Unlike traditional backup chains where deleting one link breaks the entire sequence, using Inverse Chain technology the "base image" (the full backup) is not a static file at the start of the chain. Instead, it "rolls" to the next, making current restores extremely fast while older data is stored as incremental changes.
We currently offer 1-year Time-Based Retention (TBR). Under the time-based retention model, your Datto Endpoint Backup Agents will:
- keep all intra-daily backups for seven days
- after that, keep daily backups for the next week
- after that, keep weekly backups for the next month
- keep the remaining backups for one year
