Basic steps to ensure proper communication between the Unitrends Appliance and a Unitrends Client Agent for Windows.

SUMMARY

Basic steps to follow to ensure you have done everything possible to setup communication between the Unitrends appliance and the Unitrends Client Agent for Windows.

ISSUE

Basic steps to follow to ensure you have done everything possible to setup communication between the Unitrends appliance and the Unitrends Client Agent for Windows.

RESOLUTION

1) Update the Unitrends appliance to the current release and install the agent of the matching release.  During initial agent installation, ensure the agent is registered (step 5 below) to the appliance within 25 hours of its installation into Windows.

2) Ensure TCP ports 1743 and 888 are allowed to reach your Windows or Linux client, and 1743 - 1749 are allowed outgoing from the client to the appliance.  Rules for these ports are created automatically in the default Windows firewall if it is active during the agent's initial installation but may need to be created if using 3rd party software firewalls as well as on Linux systems.

3) Ensure your Windows machine and Unitrends appliance occupy the same VLAN or flat network segment.  Agent protecting using SAP (Secure Agent Pairing) cannot be performed through a hardware firewall, NAT, or gateway.

3) If you are protecting systems using security software (antivirus, antimilaware, firewall, etc.), review the following KB:
Backups are running slowly on servers using anti-virus software Allow Exclusions for security software
• Create inbound and outbound firewall rules that allow TCP ports 1743 thru 1749 at allowed to communicate between the Unitrends Appliance's IP and the computer you are protecting.

4) Ensure you have added your windows agents as well as unitrends Appliance to your local DNS server so IP lookup by host name will function in both directions.  (client to agent and agent to client) and that your local DNS server is one of the DNS server IPs you have provided in your applaince's network configuration.  If local DNS is not an option in your environment, ensure the hosts file on each client has an entry for the Unitrends appliance

5) Log onto the Unitrends appliance and go to the CONFIGURE > Protected Assets Tab.   From here, either attempt to add your client to the appliance supplying the correct short DNS name and IP address, or, if it was prior already added as a protected asset, click the box to the left of the name. Click Edit above, and then click Save.
