AAPS Installer has an error while trying to install SQL Express

Note: This article applies to multiple AuthAnvil products with the same root issue.

Issue

During the installation for AuthAnvil Two Factor Auth or AuthAnvil Password Server you selected "Install a New SQL Server Express Instance". The installation of SQL failed with an error.

Cause

There are several reasons a SQL installation could fail. Most often it is related to insufficient permissions or admin rights. The quickest workaround is to download and install SQL Express apart from the installation, and point our installer to the existing SQL Server.

Resolution

Here are the links to download SQL Express 2008:

32-bit: http://download.microsoft.com/download/D/1/8/D1869DEC-2638-4854-81B7-0F37455F35EA/SQLEXPR_x86_ENU.exe 64-bit: http://download.microsoft.com/download/D/1/8/D1869DEC-2638-4854-81B7-0F37455F35EA/SQLEXPR_x64_ENU.exe

After installing SQL Express you can install 2FA or PWS by re-running the installer and selecting "Install to an existing SQL Server". Point it to the local server name with the instance that you provided (usually SQLExpress or AuthAnvil).

Affects

All versions of AuthAnvil Password Server and AuthAnvil Two Factor Auth
