Issue

VPN clients attempt to authenticate and recieve the following error:

RemoteAccess error with an Event ID of 20073. The error consists of, “The following error occurred in the Point to Point Protocol module on port VPN5-9, UserName: USER. The authentication server did not respond to the authentication requests in a timely fashion.

The user then attempts to reconnect and is able to connect immediately.

Cause

SQL Express can take up to 16 seconds to respond to a query after a period of inactivity as it is starting up from idle. This is normal behavior for this edition of SQL and cannot be prevented.

Resolution

Create a backup of AuthAnvil and Install AuthAnvil on SQL Server Standard Edition.  Only SQL Express has this behavior.
