Why does the Windows Logon Prompt Does Not Appear After Install?

Issue

Installing the Windows Credential Provider does not complete correctly, and the AuthAnvil Passcode prompt does not appear when logging into the machine.

Cause #1

Windows Credential Provider will fail to write certain settings when it is installed from a network share or external drive. AuthAnvil installers must be run on the local file system.

Cause #2

Software that modifies or changes the standard Windows Logon screen can also interfere with the Credential Provideder.

Examples of that Software are.

  1. Facial Recognition.
  2. Fingerprint Reader.
  3. Antivirus Software.
  4. Other Credential Based Software.

Resolution #1

First, make sure all of the previous installation components are removed:

  1. 1. If it is present, uninstall the software from Control Panel -> Programs and Features
  2. 2. Delete the following files: C:\Windows\System32\AAWinLogonCP.dll C:\Windows\SysWOW64\AAWinLogonCP.dll C:\Program Files\Scorpion Software\WinLogon (delete the entire folder)
  3. 3. Remove the following Registry keys, making sure to export / back them up before deleting:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Scorpion Software\AuthAnvilLogon (Remove whole folder / key, or you can remove "Scorpion Software" folder if nothing is inside it)

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Authentication\Credential Providers\{ABAA8F45-5683-42b5-BC15-E44D6CBB8ED4} (Remove whole ABAA folder / key)

Now that all of the previous components have been uninstalled, re-run the installation from the local machine.

Resolution #2

You will need to disable or remove the software to allow the Credential Provider to properly function. For assistance with removal or disabling software pre-installed on a PC please contact the OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) or the Software maker for directions.

Affects

All versions of Windows Credential Provider.
