Two-Factor Auth upgrade guide from v5.0 to v5.6

Note: Upgrading 2FA from v5.0 or higher will also upgrade SSO to the matching released version.

Note: Please ensure you have temporarily disabled any Network or Firewall Rules warning/blocking the download of .EXE files. The 2FA Upgrade will need to download the newest AuthAnvilSSO.EXE file to upgrade SSO as well. Once the Upgrade is complete you will be able to re-enable. Failure to do this will result in installation failure.

Step 1 – Backup your existing data by creating a backup (bup) file.

  1. Open a command window on the AuthAnvil server and navigate to the directory where you would like to save your backup file (i.e. cd D:\AuthAnvilBackups).
  2. NOTE: The upgrade will delete and overwrite files in the C:\Program Files\Scorpion Software\AuthAnvil directory so be certain that your backup is not saved there.
  3. To run the backup, run the command aabackup.exe followed by the SQL instance name.
    i.e. aabackup.exe SBS2008\AUTHANVIL
  4. Your bup file is created and saved in the same directory. If the backup is successful, the tool will complete silently. If you receive an error, confirm the SQL instance name, and that your user account has privileges to access the database and run the backup again.
  5. Confirm that your file is valid by ensuring that it is well-formed XML.

Remember to move this file to a safe location as it stores sensitive data from your server database. When the upgrade runs the existing AuthAnvil files and folders will be wiped and recreated.

Step 2 – Upgrade AuthAnvil Two Factor Auth Server

When upgrading from v5.0 to v5.6 you can do an in-place upgrade with the AuthAnvil Two Factor Auth installer.

  1. Ensure your *.bup file is moved to a safe, but accessible location.
  2. Download and run the v5.6 installer from https://helpdesk.kaseya.com/forums/23070238
  3. The installer detects your existing installation and gives you the option to upgrade.
  4. Enter your company’s subscription information.
  5. Enter the information for your SQL Server.
  6. The installer completes the upgrade for Two Factor Auth and Single Sign On (if installed)

If you are upgrading from a version of Two Factor Auth older than v5.0, you need to do a complete uninstall and reinstall.

  1. Ensure your *.bup file is moved to a safe, but accessible location.
  2. Uninstall AuthAnvil Single Sign On.
  3. Uninstall AuthAnvil Two Factor Auth.
  4. Download and run the v5.6 installer from the website.
  5. Select the “New Install and Restore Data” option.
  6. Browse to the location of your *.bup file.
  7. Enter your company’s subscription information.
  8. Enter the information for your SQL Server.
  9. Choose the Web Site that is bound to your SSL certificate.
  10. The installer will ask you to verify the base URL.
  11. If previously installed, AuthAnvil Single Sign On will be installed automatically.
  12. Follow this guide to restore your Single Sign On data.

Step 3 – Test upgraded AuthAnvil Two Factor Auth install

With all the previous configuration settings now restored, your installation SHOULD be back and fully working.

To test that this is true for AuthAnvil Two Factor Auth, follow these steps:

  1. Using an AuthAnvil Two Factor Auth account that is a site admin, log in to the AuthAnvil Manager using your AuthAnvil Two Factor Auth credential.
  2. Click the Users tab, click a user name, then click on the Token Information tab, then Test Token. Follow the on screen instructions and ensure you can successfully authenticate that token.
