Why does KES install fail due to pending file operations?

KB#:  KKB000203

QUESTION

Why does KES install fail due to pending file operations?

KES install fails (or in some cases falsely reports "AVG removed by user" after attempting to install)

AVG install log (/kes/avginstall.log) contains an error like this (exact error code and service name may vary): -

<failure phase="install" item="" action="plan_inst" severity="error" code="0xe001f274" message="Service AvgRkx86 needs to be installed, but it has been marked by the Windows as delete pending during previous uninstallation process. Please restart the computer to finnish pending service deletion." />
<failure phase="action" item="" action="plan" severity="error" code="0xe001f274" message="Service AvgRkx86 needs to be installed, but it has been marked by the Windows as delete pending during previous uninstallation process. Please restart the computer to finish pending service deletion." />
</avg_installation_record>

Installation failed due to Windows Pending File Rename Operations.

ANSWER

Restart the computer and try the install again.

If the issue persists, make sure that there are no AVG* process running, and then delete all AVG folders: -

Win XP/2003:
C:\Program Files\AVG\AVG9
C:\Program Files\AVG\AVG8
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\avg9
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\avg8

Windows Vista/7/2008:
C:\Program Files\AVG or C:\Program files(x86)\AVG (for 64bit OS)
C:\ProgramData\AVG8
C:\ProgramData\AVG9
C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Roaming\AVG8
C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Roaming\AVG9

Run regedit and locate the following key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE >> SYSTEM >> CurrentControlSet >> Control >> Session Manager >> PendingFileRenameOperations

Verify that the "value data" of the PendingFileRenameOperations contains only AVG files or directories, and manually delete the key PendingFileRenameOperations.

APPLIES TO

Kaseya Endpoint Security (KES) - all versions
AVG - all versions
